Alena Walker
writer, PR,
campaigns
The power of what we say and how we say it can generate real change.
As a writer and comms specialist, I create impactful campaigns to shape a better future and I write about food, farming, creative living and inspiring folk.
I live on the blustery north coast of Northern Ireland and I'm a lover of seasonal living, herbal potions and growing herbs and flowers.
Stories of our food reconnect us to an intimate relationship with what and how we eat. Tales of the shifting seasons rekindle our defence of the natural world. Stories of how people live and create remind us to refuel our own creative inspirations.
I like writing about people who are shaping our world through food, farming and art.
The common thread through my work is people with passions and purpose. I like writing about people who are shaping our landscapes and the contents of our plates in a positive way. I also enjoy writing about interior design, particularly through the lens of sustainability, and I write monthly for 91 magazine.
I was a finalist in the Mogford Short Story Prize in food writing and a Young Writer Delegate for the Irish Writers Centre and Irish Literature Festival Dublin.
Past work
For over a decade, I've worked in PR and as a writer for independent magazines internationally, including 91 magazine, Pellicle, New River Press, New Zealand Herald, majestic disorder and Refinery29, among others.
My eclectic editorial and multimedia experience includes projects focused on food system change, cultural identity, sustainability and environmental advocacy.
"Alena has been writing for 91 Magazine for a few years now and she has been a joy to work with. Her writing is exceptional and never needs much editing which makes my job easier. Not only is her writing beautiful, descriptive yet informative, Alena is also reliable and communicative which makes for a great working relationship."
- Caroline Rowland, Editor, 91 magazine
Food and farming
I also work as the Head of Communications for the Nature Friendly Farming Network, a UK-wide network for thousands of farmers who are farming in ways that reverse biodiversity loss, tackle climate change and restore our landscapes. In this role, I create campaigns to amplify the voices and experiences of regenerative farmers across the UK. I oversee the NFFN’s presence in the press and media and devise impactful narratives on how nature-friendly farming benefits people, farmers and our environment.
I'm passionate about creating sustainable social and environmental change and I've been involved in local food growing projects in Northern Ireland.
Rethink Food
A campaign which examined the myths, challenges and opportunities presented to farmers in the current food system. It explored the role of UK farmers in shaping a better food system from the farm ground up.
Case studies
Website launch
Farming Champions
A year-long programme supporting 25 regenerative farmers around the UK to share their stories in the press and media, including providing briefings on advocacy and training to develop their communication skills.
Redeveloped NFFN's online space as a one-stop website for all things nature-friendly farming, including farmer stories, thinkpieces, educational resources and a member login area.
I interview farmers and write journalistic feature-length articles on how they're adopting regenerative practices and navigating intense interconnected challenges within our food system.
